Immediate Response Steps

  1. De-energize the situation

    • Shut off all power sources
    • Disable power supply or breaker to stop current flow
    • Unplug the system from its power source

  2. Seek medical attention

    • All electrical shocks require medical evaluation
    • Burns can be evaluated on a case-by-case basis
    • When in doubt, seek medical attention

  3. Report the incident

    • Submit a safety ticket documenting the event
    • Include all relevant details for investigation and prevention

Electrical Shock Victim Response

DO NOT Become Another Victim

CRITICAL: Never touch a person who may still be in contact with electricity. You will become part of the circuit.

Immediate Response for Electrical Shock Victims

  1. Ensure Scene Safety:

    • Look for the source of electricity
    • Turn off power at breaker or disconnect
    • If you cannot turn off power, use non-conductive material (dry wood, plastic, rubber) to separate victim from source
    • Never use metal or wet objects

  2. Call 911 Immediately:

    • Even if victim appears fine
    • Internal injuries may not be visible
    • Cardiac effects can be delayed

  3. Check Victim's Condition (only after power is off):

    • Check for consciousness
    • Check for breathing
    • Check for pulse
    • Look for entry and exit burn wounds

  4. If Victim is Unconscious:

    • Begin CPR if trained
    • Use AED if available
    • Continue until emergency services arrive
    • Do not move victim unless in immediate danger

  5. If Victim is Conscious:

    • Keep them still and calm
    • Cover burns with sterile gauze (do not use ointments)
    • Monitor for shock symptoms
    • Document everything for medical personnel

Special Considerations

High Voltage Incidents

  • Stay at least 20 feet away from high voltage sources
  • Call utility company immediately
  • Do not approach until utility confirms power is off

Arc Flash Victims

  • May have severe burns without electrical contact
  • Cool burns with water if safe to do so
  • Remove smoldering clothing unless stuck to skin
  • Watch for respiratory distress from inhaled hot gases

What NOT to Do

  • Never touch victim if still in contact with electricity
  • Don't use water near electrical sources
  • Don't apply ice or ointments to electrical burns
  • Don't give victim anything to eat or drink
  • Don't assume victim is okay if they say they feel fine

Post-Incident Requirements

  • All electrical shock victims must receive medical evaluation
  • Document incident for OSHA reporting
  • Preserve scene for investigation
  • Notify management immediately
